EBSD Workshop – Novel EBSD indexing techniques, in-situ EBSD, ECCI and beyond
Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) has long been established as a powerful and widely used technique for determining crystal orientations in polycrystalline materials. Over the years, EBSD has become indispensable in materials research, enabling detailed insights into microstructure, texture, and grain boundary character. In recent years, several novel EBSD indexing approaches—such as dictionary indexing, spherical indexing, and advanced pattern matching—have emerged, offering improved accuracy and robustness for analysing complex microstructures. These methods are pushing the boundaries of EBSD, making it even more valuable for studying challenging materials systems.
Another exciting frontier is in-situ EBSD, which allows researchers to track microstructural evolution directly under external stimuli such as heating, mechanical deformation, or environmental changes. This dynamic approach provides unique insights into the real-time behaviour of materials at microscale.
Beyond EBSD, Electron Channelling Contrast Imaging (ECCI) has been developed as a complementary technique. By leveraging EBSD results for precise diffraction geometry alignment, ECCI enables high-resolution imaging of crystal defects within scanning electron microscopes. More importantly, it opens the door to quantitative Burgers vector analysis, significantly advancing our ability to characterize and understand defects in crystalline materials. This workshop will explore these recent advances in EBSD and its extensions, highlighting the novel techniques, applications, and opportunities they bring for materials research.
